Sir Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during WWII, and he is best known for leading his country to victory after coming so close to defeat at the hands of the Nazis. Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill was born two months prematurely on November 8, 1874, in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. Winston grew up in Dublin until 1888, when he transferred to a boarding school near London before enrolling in the British Royal Military College. He served in the military for a time before becoming a journalist and author. His political career began in 1900, when he was elected to the House of Commons. His political career advanced, and he became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1940.

Winston Churchill was born to Lord Randolph Churchill, a British statesman, and Lady Jeanette Jerome, the daughter of an American millionaire.

Winston had a younger brother, Jack, who was born in 1880.

Winston almost didn’t get into military school because he wasn’t a good student and struggled to pass the entrance exam. He finally got in on the third try.

Winston Churchill was kidnapped by Dutch descendants fighting alongside the British in South Africa in 1899. Winston escaped by climbing a wall, and with the assistance of a coal mine manager, he traveled approximately 300 miles to his rescue. He chronicled his adventures in a book.

Winston Churchill was elected to the House of Commons in 1900. He held a number of positions until 1940, when he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty and given command of the Royal Navy. The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister at the time was Neville Chamberlain, but the country was losing faith in him as it appeared that the Nazis would win the war.

Neville Chamberlain resigned his position as Prime Minister and Winston Churchill took his place. Winston Churchill was 65 when he took office.

Winston Churchill sent the British into France to fight the Nazis, and developed an alliance with the Allied Forces, including the U.S. and Soviet Union.

Despite Churchill’s successful efforts in defeating the Nazis in WWII, when the war ended he lost the next election.

Winston Churchill was re-elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1951. He remained in office until 1955.

In 1953, Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He wrote a number of historical books.

Winston Churchill and his wife Clementine Hozier had four daughters and a son (married in 1908).

In 1941, Winston Churchill suffered a heart attack.

Winston Churchill coined several famous phrases, including “We shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”

“You were given the choice between war and dishonour; you chose dishonour, and you will have war,” Winston Churchill told Hitler.

Winston Churchill was an artist who created approximately 600 works of art during his lifetime. He was also a skilled journalist and author.

Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and became Sir Winston Churchill.

Winston Churchill died at the age of 90 on January 24, 1965.

More than 350 million people worldwide watched Sir Winston Churchill’s funeral when he died.
