Eileen Nearne was a British World War II secret agent who served as a wireless operator for the Special Operations Executive (SOE). She was born in England in 1921 and grew up in Torquay. In 1942, Nearne joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) and was later recruited by the SOE to work as a wireless operator in occupied France.

Nearne was given the code name “Madeline” and was trained in Morse code, wireless operation, and covert tactics. In 1944, she was dropped into occupied France to work with the French Resistance. She worked tirelessly to transmit messages back to England, providing vital intelligence and coordinating sabotage operations against the German forces.

Despite the extreme danger of her work, Nearne never wavered in her dedication to the cause. She successfully evaded capture for over a year, even after the rest of her network was captured or killed. In September 1944, she was finally arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned in the Ravensbrück concentration camp.

Nearne managed to escape from the camp and made her way back to England, where she was awarded the Medal of Freedom by the United States for her heroism. After the war, Nearne worked as a translator for the British government before retiring to a quiet life in Torquay. She passed away in 2010 at the age of 89.

Throughout her life, Eileen Nearne exemplified bravery, resilience, and determination. She was a true hero of World War II, and her actions helped pave the way for the Allied victory.
