Michigan is in the mid-western region of the United States, more specifically in the Great Lakes region. It is bordered by Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and Indiana. In both its northeastern and southeastern regions, Michigan shares an international border with Ontario, Canada. The state is divided into two peninsulas that are linked by the Mackinac Bridge. With 96,916 square miles, Michigan is the 11th largest state in the United States. It is the ninth most populous state, with a population of 9,895,622 people, and the 17th most densely populated. Prior to European settlement, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Algonquin, Odaawaa, and Boodewaadamii. Michigan was the 26th state to join the Union, becoming a state of the United States in 1837.
