In both the Julian and Gregorian calendars, February is the second month of the year. The month has 28 days in regular years and 29 days in leap years, with the 29th day being known as the leap day. It is the first of five months without 31 days and the only one with fewer than 30 days.

The month of February derives from the Latin word februa, which means “to cleanse,” and was named after the Roman Februalia, a month-long festival of purification and atonement held around this time of year.

February is the only month that is less than 30 days long! Although February is normally 28 days long, it is 29 days long in leap years such as 2020 and 2024.

January and February were the last two months to be added to the Roman calendar (circa 713 BC); winter was originally considered a month-less period.
